Juicing Tip #1: Storage

Could you handle this every time you wanted a glass of fresh juice?  I tried to do this every day, but the obnoxious mess nearly turned me into mommy dearest:  back off kids, mommy is making some frickin juice, and it isn’t frickin pretty…

I almost threw in the towel until a friend told me a good way to store multiple servings.  I knew that the optimal time to drink the juice is right after making it, since it isn’t exposed to much light and air, but I was willing to forego a little nutritional content if it helped my sanity.

All you need is a used, washed red wine bottle:

And a wine air evacuation pump  and stopper like this:

Now you can make a few glasses of juice, pour it through a funnel (form one out of foil until you get a good one from the store) into the wine bottle and pump the air out. The dark glass protects the nutrients from light and the air pump helps keep it fresh and limits unnecessary air exposure.

There you have it! Now you can juice and only have the ridiculous mess once or twice a week.  Is anyone out there juicing?  What is your favorite combination?

  1. I have a masticating juicer (it is shaped like a pasta extruder) and it is super easy to clean. It takes me maybe five minutes to clean up after.

I juice my breakfast and dinner and have a small healthy (solid food) lunch. I mix up my juice recipes depending on what I am bored with (i.e., if I am bored with it tasting like ginger I put in less ginger and more apples…) but I always keep the following ingredients on hand:

Granny smith apples, carrots (LOTS of carrots!), beets + beet greens, ginger, celery, parsley.

Occasionally I buy cucumber or kale.

On the weekends I buy watermelon to juice as my “water.”

    :)

Thank you so much for that information. I am going to look into masticating juicers – especially if they are easier to clean! I juice similar things to you. Had one today with way TOO MUCH ginger and nearly burned my head off…

Love this advice. We are daily juicers & by the time I’ve cleaned the juicer I have already finished my juice. Not exactly a comfy slow start to my day!

This is hear! I’ve been searching for an easy way to store juice! What about using a screw to wine bottle? Well that work just add well out should I go with a cork bottle?
    Thanks!

The key is limiting the amount of air that the juice is exposed to so I think a small screw top bottle would work if the juice went close to the top. The reason I used the special wine preserver corks is that they pump some of the air out!
