How to Join a CSA

It’s that time of year again: time to sign up for your local CSA!

CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture. It is a system in which we can support local farmers by purchasing “shares” of their crops. Depending on the size of the farm and the size of the share (how much you will actually get), it can cost anywhere from $150 to $550 a season.

Another great option is Kansas City’s Hen House Growers Alliance CSA. For $25 a week, you get a selection of locally raised farm fresh products including meat, cheese, fruits, vegetables, mils, eggs and more.

The Program runs from May 28th through September 28th. You can pick up the boxes at your favorite Hen House Market at your choice of pick up times: Saturdays from 10am-2pm or Wednesdays from 5pm to 7pm.

If you are worried it may be too much food for you, Hen House has a “Pick 5” membership, which for $15 you can pick 5 times from a large assortment every Saturday from 8am to noon. This program is only 8 weeks, from July 9th through August 27th.

It is a great way to try new local produce that you wouldn’t normally pick up. I love getting something and looking up recipes to use it!
