In the age of technology: There is nothing like seeing a face

Some days I feel like my only human connection is with:

My kids, the grocery store bagger and the three people I make eye contact with in carpool line.

Yet, I am connected to hundreds of people online through my blog, Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest.

I know that you have just written The Bacon Edition of the Worst Food Photography.

I laughed when I read that your son said “I can’t sleep because my toots keep fooling me.”

And you made me fry up and egg for dinner after I saw your Avocado, Bacon and Egg Sandwich picture.

I get tricked into feeling connected sometimes.  Like these little banters in cyberspace are filling my human need for contact.  I though I knew people…

And then I went to Bloggy Boot Camp and remembered what real human contact is (and it looks like a shower and make-up with a hand shake)

I am telling you what, I met so many amazing, talented, smart, funny women writers and entrepreneurs over the weekend, I think I’m going to need some therapy to get over my shortcomings.  At the very least my lack of craft skills.

When you get to meet successful women like Tiffany Romero, Francesca Banducci, Laurie Turk, and Danielle Smith you get both inspired and overwhelmed. In awe of the talent and possibilities. Then you think, “where do I even start?!?”

God, I forgot how fun it is to meet new people (and how nice it is to sleep in a hotel room by myself). I adore you amazing women out there. I love how the internet is giving you a voice and a place to show off your gifts. Old, young, short, tall, black, white, hairy or bald, cyberspace is the great equalizer and allows everyone to have a place.

But, it’s not the real deal. I’m so glad I got to shake you hand!

  1. Are you kidding? YOU give ME inspiration! I look forward to checkin’ in with you and your site daily, and am in constant awe of YOUR gifts. I can tell you’re a great mom, wife, friend – writer… shall I go on?

So happy you had an amazing time. I’ve met wonderful people and have cultivated great friendships through the World Wide Web, and you are so right – nothing takes place of in-person connectivity. It’s pretty cool to meet on line friends in person. There’s always a great big hug and laughter, it seems!

There’s also a unique connection with bloggers (men and women) that is so lovely. So many of us come from (and are living in) different worlds, and yet we share a common thread of our want to connect and reach out to people, perhaps share our story, etc. And as a result of interacting on line – reading – commenting – learning about others, we end up learning about ourselves.

What I find so amazing for me personally, is that I receive emails and comments about my story that are as far from judgement as I ever imagined. What a testament to the human sprit and not judging a chick by her stripper pole.

    Blogging. Who knew?

You know exactly how to make a girl feel good :) Forget the therapist, I’ll just call you! You are such a natural, you need to be traveling around inspiring others…

The web is such a unique space, isn’t it? It breaks down the barriers and lets anyone in. And then we find out we are all like! And your old stripper stories are just a chapter in all of our experiences. One day a full book, I presume.

Thanks for making me feel like something special :)

      • Any time, sister. How did you know? Traveling/speaking is in my plan, for sure.

I wrote a short post about comparing ourselves to others just this morning, actually. Great minds…Wait. Not that I’m comparing.

        Oh dear…

That’s EXACTLY what they are saying about you, dear Dalai. If you need therapy, I need to be reincarnated.
    :)

And this from the only woman in the world who could make me learn and preform a dance routine in front of hundreds of people. I must be rocking it then :)

Awesome! Meeting new people has always come so easy for you. I think it is your natural inquisitiveness and genuine interest in people’s lives and experiences.

This is so true. Nothing beats a good handshake, some laughs among friends and of course sleeping in a hotel room all alone. That last one was my favorite too. I’m so glad I got to meet you! And thanks for the shout out

Ugg! Let me see what I can do on my end. If you click to subscribe, does it give you an option to manage your subscription, where you could cancel it and start over?

Spent a ton of time on your site this morning, just clicking around and reading. You have a wonderful way of drawing people in with your eloquent writing. Keep up the good work!
